Faculty Present at STTI Chapter Meeting

Faye Grund and Patti Clayburn from AU College of Nursing, Billie Maglott from Mount Nazarene College of Nursing and Mark Fridline from Akron University presented their original research on mentoring within an accelerated nursing program at the Sigma Theta Tau International Rho Nu chapter meeting on October 2, 2017. The poster, entitled Accelerated Second Degree Mentoring Program, explains how the research showed positive qualitative results in that students who had a mentor nursing student (a student ahead of them in the program) felt support and friendship during the time of mentorship.

Accelerated BSN Program Named One of the Best in the Country

Ashland University’s Accelerated BSN Degree Program has been named as one of the top 20 programs in the country by GeriatricNursing.org, a leading online resource for providing information on nursing schools and programs that offer geriatric nursing education.

“We are very pleased to have our Accelerated BSN Program identified as one of the top 20 in the country,” said Dr. Faye Grund, dean of AU’s Schar College of Nursing and Health Sciences. 

Patti Clayburn, director of the Accelerated Second Degree program, stated, “Our Accelerated second-degree nursing program allows students a more expeditious path to a second degree, a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. The program is available for students who have a degree in another field and are seeking to pursue a career in nursing.”

Dr. Juanita Reese Kline, chair of the Nursing Department, reported that this summer, the program will enroll its largest cohort to date with 66 students. The Ashland program includes face-to-face classes, labs and clinicals with some online classes.

The Geriatric Nursing website announced its “Top 20 Online Accelerated BSN Programs” earlier this month. 

“We are glad to announce that your school’s program has been considered one of them. Congratulations,” said Meredith Rogers of Geriatric Nursing. “We understand that it takes lots of effort to maintain high standards and dedicated staff to provide the best nursing education out there, so you should all feel extremely proud of your hard work.”

New Accelerated & Advanced Entry Students

The new Accelerated and Advanced Entry students started their journey with the CONHS starting May 12th with their orientation.

Dominican Republic - Medical Mission Trip

Ashland University nursing students traveled to the Dominican Republic March 9-13, 2013 on a medical mission trip.  Lisa Young, organized the trip through the Ashland University Religious Life Department and Partner’s in Christ, an organization already serving in the Dominican Republic.

The first part of the week was spent in Juan Tomas where the team worked side-by-side with the people already serving in this area.   Students teamed up with interpreters and completed initial assessments.  Following an assessment, the Dominican people would then see one of the physicians, Dr. Aaron Young (Lisa’s brother), Johanna (a Dominican doctor), or Lisa Young (Advanced Practice Nurse).    Approximately 670 people were seen at the clinic in those 3 days.  The team also spent two days at a clinic in Mal Nambre where they saw over 350 people.    

There was a great need for medical assistance and supplies in this area.  The team took almost 8,000 Vitamins and 10,000 tablets of Ibuprofen and Acetaminophen, all of which were gone by the end of the week.  The Dominican people were greatly appreciative of these little things that we often take for granted in the US.  The team also purchased anti-parasitics to give to the people.  Infection was a common problem and was frequently seen in tonsils, ears, and wounds.  

 

At the end of the week, the AU team shared gifts from the people in the states with the children in the mission school in Juan Tomas.  They distributed coloring books and crayons to the younger children, hygiene packs to the high school, and Children’s New Testaments (donated by Temple Christian School) to the fifth to seventh graders.   Nursing students also gave antiparasitic medication to approximately 100 of the school children.  

The mission trip concluded with a trip to Colonial City where students shopped and learned more about the Dominican Republic culture.  The AU team was sad to leave the Dominican Republic people.  They will always treasure the friendships that were made, the unforgettable experiences they had, and the knowledge gained while serving in the Dominican Republic.
