Ashland University is associated
with Rho Nu-at-Large, a chapter of Sigma Theta Tau International (STTI), the Honor Society of Nursing. The mission of Sigma Theta
Tau International is to support the learning, knowledge and professional
development of nurses committed to making a difference in health worldwide. The
organization’s vision is to create a global community of nurses who lead in
using knowledge, scholarship, service and learning to improve the health of the
world’s people.

Membership is by
invitation only to baccalaureate and graduate nursing students who demonstrate
excellence in scholarship and to nurse leaders who exhibit exceptional
achievements in practice. There are currently 475 active SSTI chapters
representing 90 countries globally. The local chapter
boasts more than 350 members.
The Ashland University chapter, Rho
Nu-at-Large, is collaborating with Mount Vernon Nazarene University’s School of
Nursing to support the at-large status that began with collaboration between Ashland
University’s Rho Nu Chapter and the MedCentral College of Nursing in 2009.
On
April 1, 2012, the chapter
inducted more than 40 new members on its 10th anniversary as a chapter.
Prior to the induction, senior RN-BSN student, Sarah Koehler, was
presented with the Rho Nu-at-Large Nursing Excellence Award for Academic
Performance.

Following the induction ceremony, two Ashland
University College of Nursing faculty members also gave presentations.
Dan
Hellinger, professional instructor of nursing, and Lisa Young, director
of simulation lab, and Mt. Vernon’s nursing faculty member, Karla Adu, described
recent mission trips in a presentation titled, "Global Nursing". Hellinger and Dr. John Swope went to Eleuthera, Bahamas, with 16 AU students in
March 2011. Young visited South Africa with AU nursing students last summer and
will be returning to South Africa in May with another group of AU nursing students. Ms. Adu’s medical mission trip was to Haiti
with students this spring.

In
addition to celebrating its 10th anniversary and induction ceremony, the
chapter presented Ashland University's Schar College of Nursing and
Health Sciences with a purple jeweled globe on a shiny brass stand for
display in the new nursing academic building. Provost Dr. Frank
Pettigrew and Dean Faye Grund, (also a member) were present to accept
the gift and share their insights with the audience of over 110 members,
inductees, and guests. A reception immediately followed the ceremony.
