The Ashland University Dwight Schar College of Nursing alumni held their annual banquet at the Brown Derby Roadhouse on June 17, 2011. There were approximately 90 members and guests in attendance. The earliest graduate present was Helen Wappner---Class of 1936. The most recent graduate was Becky Mangas---Class of 2009. Members attended from the following states: California, Florida, Indiana, Michigan, Nevada, Ohio, Texas and Virginia.

Groundbreaking Held for Schar College of Nursing
The ceremony, which was held near the parking lot on the west side of the property at 1020 S. Trimble Road, featured opening remarks from Ashland University President Dr. Fred Finks.
“This is a very, very special day. This has been a dream of a lot of people in this Richland County area who are associated with health care,” said President Finks. “It is hard to believe it was just a year ago January when this idea began to take shape, that we could put together something that quick and be here today for this groundbreaking.

Ashland University Slates Groundbreaking for Dwight Schar College of Nursing
Ashland University will hold a groundbreaking ceremony on June 16 for the new $15.5 million Dwight Schar College of Nursing facility located at the corner of Trimble Road and Marion Avenue in Mansfield.
The event, to be held at 1 p.m. near the parking lot on the west side of the property at 1020 S. Trimble Road, is free and open to the public.
The ceremony will feature remarks from Ashland University President Dr. Fred Finks and will include greetings from several members of the Mansfield community, including Donald Culliver, mayor of the city of Mansfield; Kevin Nestor, president of the Richland County Chamber of Commerce; and James Meyer, CEO of MedCentral Health Systems, as well as the co-chairs for the University’s fundraising campaign for the building -- Gayle Gorman Freeman, president of Manairco Inc. in Mansfield, and Dr. Michael L. Amalfitano, president of Mid-Ohio Heart Clinic Inc. Senator Bill Harris, an honorary chair for the campaign, also will present greetings.

Dwight Schar College of Nursing Recognizes Student Achievement
On May 6, 2011, College of Nursing administration, faculty, staff, and students' friends and family came together to honor graduating pre-licensure nursing students and RN to BSN completion students finished with their nursing curriculum.
Nancy Lilburn, a pre-licensure student selected by her peers, presented remarks entitled, "As we move forward, reflections on where we have been." Likewise, Cynthia DiFrancesco, RN, presented her post-licensure remarks, "Twenty five years later...Really?!"
As a prelude to the pinning ceremony, Holly Finks, MSN, RN, provided the history of the Ashland University nursing pin. Sixteen post-licensure nurses were awarded pins, nine of them completing graduation requirements. A total of seventy four pre-licensure students were awarded pins, sixty one of them completing graduation requirements for May 2011.
