Cindy DiFrancesco, an RN to BSN student who graduated in May 2011, was interviewed regarding an article she posted to Nursezone.com. The interview addressed the topic that Cindy selected for an assignment in her nursing capstone class, "Legal, Ethical, and Political Perspectives in Nursing". Cindy, a breast cancer survivor, recently met with Ohio Representative Mike Dovilla to discuss her concerns relating to the challenge of diagnosing breast cancer via a mammogram in individuals with dense breast tissue. Dense breast tissue is comprised of less fat and more connective tissue which appears white on a mammogram. Cancer also appears white on a mammogram thus tumors are often hidden behind the dense tissue. Cindy has also worked with the "Are you Dense?" advocacy organization. Her goal is to increase awareness and initiate legislation regarding notification of breast density. As of now, the Legislative Service Commission has drafted the bill and Representative Dovilla is drumming up some co-sponsors among his colleagues in the house. Cindy DiFrancesco is currently employed by the Cleveland Clinic Foundation. Visit the following links to view Cindy's interview or to learn more about the "Are You Dense?" advocacy group.
