Alumni Host Annual Banquet

The Dwight Schar College of Nursing Alumni Association held their annual alumni banquet at the Ontario Events Center on October 5, 2019. They honored the 50 year (class of 1969) and the 25 year (class of 1994) from Mansfield General Hospital School of Nursing.

Three of the scholarship winners were present. The winners of the $1000 scholarships are Janet Arnold, Alena Holmes and Rachael Westler. The winner of the Endowed Scholarship, Hollie Dowalter, was unable to attend. She received $2350.00

The new Dean of the College of Nursing, Carrie Keib PhD, RN, was present. She introduced herself to the attendees and made brief remarks.

The Nursing Alumni are celebrating 100 years of nursing education in Richland and Ashland Counties. The Mansfield General Hospital School of Nursing opened in 1919 with four students.  Only one completed the requirements and graduated in 1922. The school closed in 2001 after having graduated 1731 nurses. MedCentral College of Nursing began accepting students in 1999 and graduated the first students in 2003. Ashland University acquired MedCentral College of Nursing in 2010 and the first students graduated from AU Dwight Schar College of Nursing (now Dwight Schar College of Nursing & Health Sciences) in 2011.

The winners of the $100 raffle were Sandra Burnett Wigton (MGH 1969), Brunda Bedell Benson (MGH 1963) and Judy Greer Davis (MGH 1965).

Rhonda Gates Phillipi and Judy Fidler Gregg from the Mansfield General Hospital Class of 1984. Rhonda traveled from Nashville, TN.

Melissa Bailey Michel was the lone 25-year graduate. She graduated in 1994 from Mansfield General Hospital School of Nursing.

Janet Arnold (left) and Alena Holmes (right) were selected by the Nursing Alumni Board to receive $1000 scholarships. 

Rachael Westler was also selected to reiceve a $1000 scholarship from the Nursing Alumni Association. 

This mirror stood in the living room at the Mansfield General Hospital School of Nursing residence as early as 1933. The students were to check their appearance prior to going to their clinical assignments in the hospital. It now sits inside the main entrance at the Ashland University Dwight Schar College of Nursing & Health Sciences on Trimble Road.
